Top negotiators from Washington and Beijing are set to talk this week via video conferencing, and soon they could be meeting in person.
White House aide Kellyanne Conway told reporters U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin may go to China “shortly” and continue to speak with their Chinese counterparts.
You’ll remember late last month, President Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit in Osaka, Japan. The two sides agreed to a trade war truce. President Trump promised not to impose more tariffs, as long as negotiations continued, but Reuters reports the summit did little to clear the path for top negotiators to solve the problems that caused talks to break down in early May. That’s according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters.
One expert told Reuters he expects the negotiations to drag out for months.
