New Day Brings New Hope for USMCA Agreement

A new day brings new hope for the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, says National Reporter Betsy Jibben.

Chrystia Freeland, Canada’s deputy prime minister, and Jesus Seade, Mexico’s USMCA negotiator, are due to meet U.S. Trade Representative Bob Lighthizer Wednesday in Washington, D.C., to discuss the “side letter” that would include the changes negotiated with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

Pelosi says Democratic lawmakers are “within range of a substantially improved” trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. But Jibben reports Pelosi needs to see progress from negotiations put in writing from U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer for “final review.”

“Pelosi has insisted on changes to the agreement that Democrats believe will do more to protect workers and the environment and to make sure the deal’s provisions can be enforced,” Jibben reports.

Pelosi has been harshly criticized by President Trump over the delay.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro told Fox News that Lighthizer will “do whatever needs to do to give them what they need to get confident about it, meaning that, if they want paper on the deal, yeah.”
