Chinese officials say the outbreak of African Swine Fever in the count

China’s Deputy Ag Minister says the spread of Africa Swine Fever (ASF), which has killed 1.2 million animals, has “significantly slowed.”

He announced at a news conference in Beijing that there have been 44 recorded outbreaks of ASF in China since the start of this year. That’s compared to 99 between August and December of last year. He said extra support would be provided to those “at the grassroots level”  but admitted the situation for controlling the spread of the virus remained “complicated and grim.”

China produces and consumes two-thirds of the world’s pigs.
